Dr. Stelios Vitzilaios Discusses Breast Cancer Prevention, Viruses, and Health Services in Naxos

The importance of health prevention, as well as the new services being developed in Naxos in the field of medical care, were at the center of the discussion with Dr. Stelios Vitzilaios, physician and owner of Naxos Medical, who spoke to Aegean Voice and the show “Mera Mesimeri” with Popi Alimperti.

On the occasion of initiatives implemented for breast cancer prevention, Mr. Vitzilaios emphasized that this is a disease showing an increasing trend globally, and early diagnosis through preventive screening can save lives.

As he explained, Naxos Medical places particular emphasis on preventive screening for women, and as part of informational activities and initiatives to enhance prevention, discounts are also offered on breast examinations to facilitate more women in undergoing screening.

The polyclinic operates with a team of specialized doctors, including a breast surgeon and a radiologist, and reconstructive surgery is also available, aiming for comprehensive management of breast conditions.

Mr. Vitzilaios noted that many examinations and services that previously required travel to Athens can now be performed in Naxos, which significantly facilitates island residents.

He also presented the new Doctor Naxos 24/7 service, which is primarily aimed at tourism and hospitality businesses.

The service provides immediate medical consultation or visits for visitors who may need medical assistance during their stay on the island, creating an additional sense of security for tourists and industry professionals.

As he explained, in a tourist destination like Naxos, where the average length of stay for visitors is a few days, it is important to have immediate access to health services without inconvenience or uncertainty.

Mr. Vitzilaios also referred to this winter’s viral infections, noting a significant outbreak of influenza A, and cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) appeared, which can cause serious complications, especially in the elderly or individuals with underlying health conditions.

He stated that a vaccine is now available for this specific virus, which can provide immunity for several years, particularly for vulnerable groups.

He also highlighted the importance of vaccinations and basic protective measures, such as personal hygiene and wearing masks in healthcare settings when symptoms are present.

Finally, he mentioned that in the coming period, public awareness activities are planned for the local community, such as talks in schools about blood donation and first aid training, including defibrillator use, in villages across Naxos.

Referring to the general health situation on the island, he stressed that the private and public sectors operate complementarily, aiming for better patient care and decongestion of the hospital, especially during the summer months when the population of Naxos significantly increases.
