It is a method that combines liposuction and fat transfer to lift and enhance the buttocks, offering curves and femininity without implants. However, as its popularity increases, so do the myths surrounding it. Let’s clarify what is true and what is a misconception about the famous BBL.

Myth 1: BBL is a dangerous procedure that is not worth it

► Truth: Like any surgical procedure, BBL carries risks. In the past, lack of experience and incorrect techniques increased complication rates, such as intravenous fat injection. However, today, when performed by a specialized plastic surgeon with in-depth knowledge of anatomy and strict adherence to safety guidelines (such as injecting only into the subcutaneous plane), BBL can be absolutely safe and yield excellent results.

Myth 2: The results are unnatural and exaggerated

► Truth: Images circulating on social media often show exaggerated results, which do not reflect modern aesthetics. In reality, most women choose a natural outcome – with harmonious curves, a better waist-to-hip ratio, and overall silhouette improvement. The procedure is tailored to each woman’s needs, and the plastic surgeon can achieve the desired result – from a subtle lift to more pronounced buttocks.

Myth 3: All transferred fat remains

► Truth: No. After transfer, a percentage of the fat will be absorbed by the body – usually around 30-40%. For this reason, surgeons often transfer a little more fat, anticipating normal absorption. The final shape of the buttocks stabilizes approximately 3-6 months after the procedure.

Myth 4: Recovery is easy and painless

► Truth: BBL recovery is demanding – not so much due to pain, but due to the instructions that must be followed. For 2-4 weeks, the patient must not sit directly on their buttocks or sleep on their back. This is essential to avoid pressure on the transplanted fat and ensure maximum survival. The use of special BBL pillows and adherence to the doctor’s instructions are necessary.

Myth 5: BBL is only for young women

► Truth: Not at all. Age alone is not a limiting factor. On the contrary, many women aged 40 or 50 who have lost volume in the buttock area or desire a silhouette refresh are excellent candidates. The important thing is to have sufficient fat for harvesting and no contraindications for general anesthesia.

Myth 6: All candidates can undergo BBL

► Truth: No. To be a good candidate, one must have sufficient fat for harvesting (from the abdomen, back, thighs, etc.), be in relatively good physical condition, and not smoke – or quit smoking several weeks before and after the procedure, as nicotine reduces fat survival. Also, a proper psychological approach and realistic expectations are important.

Myth 7: I can gain weight and “build” buttocks for BBL

► Truth: Weight gain before BBL does not guarantee better results – and often leads to fat accumulation in undesirable areas. Fat quality is more important than quantity. The ideal time to consider a BBL is when you have a stable weight and adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Myth 8: BBL is permanent

► Truth: The fat that survives after the procedure is permanent – provided you maintain a stable weight. Weight gain or loss can change the appearance of the buttocks. Also, the natural aging process affects body shape and tone over the years, so no result is “eternal,” but it can last for many years.

In Conclusion

The Brazilian Butt Lift is a technically advanced procedure that, when performed correctly, can provide harmony, self-confidence, and a more feminine contour. The key, however, lies in personalization, safety, and the correct choice of surgeon. Do not be swayed by images and trends – get informed, ask questions, and make your decision only when you feel ready.

Your body is unique. If you decide to give it a refresh, make sure to do so with knowledge, respect, and safety.

We thank Mr. Nikolaos Moustakis, Plastic Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgeon, specialized in the United Kingdom (St. Andrew’s Centre for Plastic Surgery & Burns).
