At the same time, regular preventive screening contributes to the early diagnosis of the disease, leading to a very good prognosis.

Annual clinical breast examination is important, along with mammography and ultrasound, for the early diagnosis of breast cancer.

Breast self-examination should be performed once a month on the 10th day of the cycle, if possible in the shower where warm water and soap facilitate palpation. Any change in breast texture or the palpation of a lump should prompt a visit to the doctor.

In women with very dense breasts, a lesion may not appear on mammography in 8-10% of cases. For this reason, mammography should be combined with ultrasound, and a breast MRI should be performed every five years.

The probability of a woman developing breast cancer during her lifetime is 12%, with the period between 45-65 years being the most critical, though younger or older ages are not excluded.

Heredity is not the sole factor in breast cancer development. Approximately 15-20% of women with breast cancer have a family history. Women with a first-degree relative (mother, sister) who developed breast cancer before the age of 50, or a second-degree relative (grandmother, aunt, cousin) who developed it before the age of 65, belong to a higher-risk group. Naturally, the risk increases if more than one relative has been affected.

A father or brother with prostate or colon cancer increases the risk of breast cancer in their daughter.

There is no need to panic if microcalcifications are found on a mammogram. Most are benign, and only in certain cases—related to their number, shape, extent in the breast, or tendency to cluster—is further investigation required.

Women who exercise are less likely to develop breast cancer. Any form of exercise, such as daily brisk walking and climbing stairs, leads to a reduction in blood estrogen levels.

It is beneficial to consume B vitamins through our diet by eating beans, cereals, etc. Also, green vegetables and carrots contain antioxidants and carotenoids that prevent cell damage and their transformation into cancerous cells.

It is important for women to maintain a normal body weight throughout their lives, especially after menopause. Fat produces and stores estrogen, which leads to an increase in circulating estrogen in the blood.

It is advisable for women to avoid soy and its derivatives (soy milk, tofu, etc.), as well as products containing soy, because it contains isoflavones. These substances mimic the action of estrogens in the body (estrogen-mimicking) and can potentially trigger the development of breast cancer.

Various benign breast lumps, such as cysts and fibrocystic mastopathy, do not increase the risk of developing breast cancer.

Pain is rarely a symptom of breast cancer. It is usually due to cysts, breast inflammation, hormonal disorders, etc.

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), breast cancer in its early stages has a survival rate of over 90%. In stages 0 and I, the five-year survival rate is 100%, and the ten-year rate is over 90%.

Source: https://bioclinic.gr/14pragmata-karkinos-mastou/[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content”
