Alkiviadis Grigorakis is a Urologist Surgeon. He was admitted to the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and graduated in 1990. He specialised in Urology by training at the “Evangelismos” General Hospital of Athens (GNA) and for 6 months at the Children’s Hospital “Aghia Sophia” (training in Paediatric Urology).

In 1997, he received further training in the USA as a Research Fellow in Urogenital Oncology at the Northwest Cancer Foundation, Seattle, WA, USA, under Professor Gerald Murphy, in pioneering research programmes concerning prostate cancer and the then recently discovered PSMA.

In 1999, he further specialised in Reconstructive Urology and urethral surgery at Guy’s Hospital and University College Hospital, London, UK, under Professor Anthony Mundy, Director of the Institute of Urology.

At the same time, he obtained the title of Fellow of the European Board of Urology (FEBU) after successful exams and completed his doctoral thesis on prostate cancer. In 2000, he was awarded a PhD in Medicine from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

In 2001, after successful evaluation, he was appointed as Urology Consultant B at the Special Cancer Hospital of Piraeus “Metaxa”.

In 2003, alongside his clinical work at Metaxa Hospital, he was seconded to the newly established General University Hospital “Attikon”, where he participated in the initial team of doctors who organised and opened the hospital.

He was later transferred to the “Attikon” Hospital, where he worked until 2008, organising and covering the urological needs of the hospital, examining thousands of patients on an outpatient basis, while performing hundreds of surgeries covering the entire spectrum of Urology.

In 2008, after successful evaluation, he was appointed as Consultant A at the Urology Clinic of GNA “Evangelismos,” where he remained, being promoted to the rank of Director of the Urology Department.

In over 20 years of intensive and continuous work in major hospitals, he gained extensive experience across the full spectrum of Urology. Particularly in Urological Oncology, he has been involved since the beginning of his career in the surgical treatment of cancers of the genitourinary system, prostate cancer, cancers of the bladder, kidney, penis, and testes.

His specialisation in Reconstructive Urology enabled him to manage a large number of highly complex oncological and non-oncological cases and to be one of the pioneers in the use of modern surgical techniques (Organ Adaptive Surgery). Keeping up with developments in minimally invasive surgery (MIS), he developed Laparoscopic Urology at the “Evangelismos” hospital in kidney and prostate surgeries, both oncological (nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy, radical prostatectomy) and non-oncological (pyeloplasty, heminephrectomy, kidney cysts, ureteral strictures, donor nephrectomy), transperitoneal or retroperitoneal.

In Endoscopic Urology (Endourology), which was objectively an integral part of daily hospital reality, he gained significant experience in transurethral surgeries of the lower (bladder, prostate, urethra) and upper urinary tract (ureteroscopy, flexible ureteronephroscopy, percutaneous nephroscopy) in both oncological and non-oncological surgeries and all types of urolithiasis.

Specifically, he modified the TURIS transurethral prostatectomy technique (TURBE-PÒ), making it practically feasible for all sizes of prostate adenomas, even very large ones (>100cc).

Regarding Reconstructive Urology, in which he is specialised, he dealt with the restoration of urinary incontinence, ureteral strictures of all types, urethral strictures, urinary fistulas (vesicovaginal, ureterovaginal, enterovesical, urocystic), congenital malformations, and the restoration of post-traumatic complications.

He is a member of the Hellenic and European Urological Associations (HUA, EAU), having occasionally served as a member of the Board of Directors of the HUA and president of the Urogenital Oncology Department. He has participated in many Greek and international conferences as a speaker or coordinator, having given numerous lectures and authored several scientific papers, published in reputable international scientific journals.
